A total lunar eclipse will be visible over most of Northern Nevada before dawn Tuesday morning.

A partial eclipse will start at 1:51 a.m. Tuesday and become total starting at 2:52 a.m. By 4:22 a.m., the total phase will be over, but then as the moon begins to emerge from Earth's shadow, another partial phase will begin. The eclipse will end at 5:24 a.m., just as the sky lightens at dawn.

Lunar eclipses take place when the full moon and the sun are opposite each other in space, and the Earth in between them casts its shadow over the bright moon's face.

But even when the eclipse is total, some indirect sunlight manages to reach the moon. The earth's atmosphere filters out most of the sun's blue light, leaving only the red frequencies to light the lunar surface.

WASHINGTON (AP) " Attorney General Alberto Gonzales' resignation was welcomed Monday by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and by Daniel Bogden, the former U.S. attorney for Nevada.

"I think he made the right decision to step down," said Bogden, who was among the federal prosecutors dismissed in the Justice Department's controversial mass firings of U.S. attorneys last year.

"There comes a time when if you don't have the respect of the Congress and the American public and your own people in the department then it's time to step down," Bogden told The Associated Press by telephone from Reno, Nev.

"I don't think he served me well at all," added Bogden. "I don't want to elaborate on that. There's so many things I can say but I want to keep that to myself."

Reid had long called for Gonzales to resign.

"Alberto Gonzales was never the right man for this job. He lacked independence, he lacked judgment, and he lacked the spine to say no to Karl Rove," Reid said in a statement. "This resignation is not the end of the story. Congress must get to the bottom of this mess and follow the facts where they lead, into the White House."

Bogden's firing had infuriated both Reid and Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev. Ensign recommended Bogden, a political independent, for the top prosecutor job in Nevada in 2001.

Some of the prosecutors who were fired had lost support from home-state lawmakers, but Bogden had excellent performance reviews.

Ensign, normally a Bush administration loyalist, had denounced Bogden's firing as "completely mishandled." He had stopped short of calling for Gonzales to resign but had demanded that Gonzales restore Bogden's reputation.

However, Bogden said Monday that he had decided he couldn't return to the Justice Department under Gonzales' leadership and had been interviewing for other jobs in Nevada.

He said it was too early to say whether he would reconsider that decision with Gonzales gone. "I just got that news at 5 o'clock this morning," Bogden said.

- Gas pipeline work continues on the east and west sides of Fairview Drive, from Fifth Street to Butti Way. Intermittent traffic controls for heavy equipment.
