The summer accomplishments keep coming for CHS

NJROTC cadets from CHS attended a summer leadership academy at the Naval Air Station, Whidbey Island, Washington in June. One hundred and thirty-three cadets from over 40 different high schools representing eight states attended the week-long training. Their training included academic classes, leadership exercises, physical fitness and military drill. The attendees will be the leaders in their respective units in the fall.

Also last week, I was informed that two students from the Class of 2007 also competed in the Video Production category at the SkillsUSA National Championship in Kansas City, Mo., this summer. Tyler Bourns and Greg Saunders were required to make a one minute commercial for the World War I Museum in Kansas City. They competed against the best in forty other states, all with the same topic. Their video earned them a silver medal.

Congratulations to these recent graduates of CHS.

Staying with video production news, Brian Reedy and two of his students are invited by State Farm Insurance to attend the National Teen Driver Safety Summit in Washington, D.C., in early October. His students were responsible for developing community driver awareness programs two years in a row for the Project Ignition contest put forth by State Farm Insurance.

Both years the CHS projects finished in the top 10 in the country. The invitation is an honor for CHS as only 120 participants have been invited to attend and discuss ways to help create positive teen driver awareness programs across the country.

The senior class of 2008 is invited to attend the traditional Senior Sunrise breakfast at the football field at 6:15 a.m. Wednesday. Seniors gather to watch the sun rise on their senior year and celebrate the beginning of their last year together.

National Honor Society is hosting the first dance of the year on Friday, which is preceded in the day by a rally and football game. Dance tickets must be purchased in advance for $3. All funds raised will help the club send members to the national conference in November.

Over 80 National Honor Society student and 20 staff from CHS participated in the Relay for Life this summer in Carson City. They joined over 800 other participants in an effort to raise money and awareness for cancer research. The teams from CHS raised a combined total of over $22,000 for the American Cancer Society. Way to go Senators!

The student leaders of the school are calling for an open meeting every other Wednesday, in which the students, staff, and community are welcome to listen, provide feedback, and ask questions of the student government. The student leaders are hoping this will open the lines of communication with the student body and staff. Contact Jenn Tartan at 283-1910 for meeting time and place.

Home athletic events this week include Boys Varsity Tennis on Tuesday vs. Douglas High, Thursday Boys Varsity Tennis vs. Hug High and Girls Volleyball vs. McQueen and Friday will see the Boys Varsity Football take on McQueen.
