A group of community activists believe it's time for Dayton to become a city.

"I think Dayton is ready because we finally have the population and because people are ready to have local leadership make some of the decisions for Dayton," said Christy McGill, executive director of Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey counties. "People want things and they want to see Dayton improve and move forward more than ever before."

McGill has arranged for a meeting 6:30 p.m. today at the Dayton Intermediate School gym, 315 Old Dayton Valley Road, Dayton.

She said the meeting will include a presentation by a representative from the Nevada Department of Taxation to explain the costs and taxes that might come from incorporation, and a talk by a member of the League of Cities to explain the process.

"We're also trying to get someone from the committee that did Fernley, so we can see how Fernley did it," she said. "We're going to look at pros and cons, to see if we have enough people there to do a grass roots incorporation of Dayton."

McGill admitted that the businesses in the Dayton area have to be comfortable with the possibility for incorporation to become a reality.

"In my personal opinion, Dayton is ready," she said.

She and others involved in the drive have invited elected officials and other community leaders and put notices in the schools and on area bulletin boards.

"Most of the responses we got were from people concerned with taxes," she said.

McGill said Healthy Communities is not the force behind the push for incorporation, but that about 10 Dayton residents have been involved in promoting it.

She said they will know how many others care about the issue based on attendance at today's meeting.
