Everyone knows about the Toys for Tots drive and all children deserve a present, but what also is important to everyone this holiday season is having enough food. Friday you can help by either giving a cash or food donation for the annual Fill a Can, Feed a Family program at the Governor's Mansion. This Share your Holiday Food Drive happens once a year and it's easy and fun. The event features music and great people volunteering to take the food donation right from your car. So do a drive-by and drop off some food for families in need this holiday season.

If you have children running around indoors and are looking for something to do outside, head downtown to the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada. Right now they have some wonderful programs, such as Books & Brags and the Music Mentoring program. They also have a beautiful Victorian doll house that they are selling tickets to win for only $10 a ticket. You have to see the amazing doll collection and new exhibits. A great way to entertain children and adults alike is coming your way with the "The Peanut Cracker - The Story In A Nutshell." It's a one-hour adaptation of "The Nutcracker" ballet and is narrated just enough so that all the audience, from age 3-93, understands the story. This fun shortened version will entertain the entire family with its magical performances. The production showcases the grace of the Sierra Nevada Ballet Company and is presented in conjunction with the Western Nevada Performing Arts Center in Carson City. It's not too long for the little ones to attend.

Winter Break is almost here and if your children need to be in an activity, check out the Carson City Recreation departments Winter Kamp. This program is available to all elementary school children in kindergarten through fifth grade. The program provides elementary-aged children with creative structure while assisting them with homework, arts and crafts, sports, games and special events.

The Mile High Jazz Band will be joined by Krista Benjamin, Suzanne Roberts, Rita Geil and other award-winning poets for an evening of jazz and poetry.
The poets will take turns reading a poem before each song played by the big band. "Reading at this venue is a lot of fun," Benjamin says. "Everyone has a chance to 'digest' one poem before hearing the next."
"It adds an element of surprise for the audience when they discover the connection between the poem and the song," says David Bugli, band leader and pianist. This is fun for the entire family and a great way to get the children into jazz and poetry.
