The public is invited to a ribbon cutting and open house 2 p.m. Tuesday at the new Carson City Sheriff's Administrative Building, 911 East Musser St.

"This facility was funded by the public. This is their facility, and they are the people we owe this too," said Sheriff Kenny Furlong.

With the construction of the building came the completion of phase one, said Furlong. In the weeks following Christmas, phase two - the demolition of the old vacant building - will take place and the area will be paved for parking.

The opening of the sheriff's new building completed the public safety complex, which began with the construction of the courthouse and jail in 1999.

The Carson City Public Safety Complex now consists of three buildings - an 80,000-square-foot courthouse and an adjoining 32,000-square-foot jail and the 40,000-square-foot sheriff's building.

The courthouse building houses four courtrooms, full court support services, and a variety of municipal services such as marriage bureau, election office and records management office. The adjoining jail houses a 164-bed detention center.

"The entire complex will fly under one flag and will bring each of our services under one roof," Furlong said.
