120 Years Ago

The bicycle rider occasionally turns his wheel to the detriment of his neighbors. On Christmas Day Mrs. Black, of Clear Creek, was driving a two-horse wagon, in which was her six-year-old boy, when the horses becoming frightened at bicycle riders, ran across the tracks and collided with an awning post in front of the Corbett House. Mrs. Black was thrown from the vehicle, but was not much hurt and then proceeded home.

100 Years Ago

Governor Sparks issues call for special legislative session. On Saturday last it will be remembered that President Roosevelt send a lengthy telegram to the governor advising him that the calling of a special session would be the only means whereby the troops could remain longer than today in the camp of Goldfield. Scores of telegrams have been received asking him to call the session from Senators Newlands and Nixon and Congressman Bartlett.

70 Years Ago

Fire that threatened destruction of the Odd Fellow's Hall was quickly brought under control and confined to the roof and attic of the main hall. The Warrens [volunteer firefighters] had several streams playing on the roof within a few moments after the alarm was sounded. Damage to the building, $5,000.

Mr. and Mrs. Joe Ricci of Dayton are a parents of a boy born December 27 at Carson-Tahoe hospital.

20 Years Ago

A Nevada gold rush may bring $900 million into the state's economy according to a study released by the state Department of Minerals. Nevada's bonanza will remain strong until the mid-1990s. Not even the glory days of the Comstock come close to matching Nevada's current gold mining boom said an article published in Forbes Magazine. Within the past week, an ounce of gold jumped to $500.

John Ascuaga leads a cattle drive from Bridgeport, Calif. to Smith Valley. Ascuaga and his son, Steve ride ahead of the 1,500 cows whose calves were weaned in October and previously trucked to Smith Valley. This is part of a 20-year tradition and includes Frank Ascuaga, John's brother, Dave Sommer, Don Spanier, Kent Davis, Terry Sullivan, Glen Allaback and Dave Roundtree.
