United Blood Services announced a need for blood donations through Jan. 2. Volunteer blood donors must be at least 17, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health. United Blood Services has two sites in Northern Nevada that are located at 1125 Terminal Way in Reno or 256 E. Winnie Lane in Carson City. To schedule an appointment to donate blood call 324-6454. Walk-ins are always welcome.




MOAA installs new officers


The Sierra Nevada Chapter of the Military Officer Association of American (MOAA) installed its new officer for 2008 at a Military Ball and installation ceremony held on the 5th of December 2008 at the Elks Lodge in Reno.


Heading the group for the coming year is Cdr. Tony R. Martinez, SC, USN(Ret), President; Col. Chris Anstassatos, NVANG(Ret), Vice President; LTCOL Tom Buntin, USA(Ret), Treasurer; CDR Carol Evans, USN(Ret), Secretary. Board Members include MAJ Warren Rapp, NVANG; COL Jack Logan, USA(Ret); CDR Phil Silver, USN(Ret); COL Kathy Roehr, NC, USA(Ret); CW4 Les Schwartz, USA(Ret); and Patricia Worden, MOAA Auxiliary.


MOAA is the nation's leading association of military officers, with nearly 380,000 members. Membership is open to active duty officers and warrant officers, Reserves and National Guard, plus former or retired officers and warrant officers, and surviving spouses. The Sierra Nevada Chapter is one of 425 MOAA chapters worldwide. The local Chapter was founded in 1978.




Beans Sousa plays at D'Vine restaurant


Singer songwriter Beans Sousa appears at D'Vine Wine bar in Carson City at 5:30 p.m. Saturday. Sousa was Lacy J Dalton's guitarist for 20 years and voted favorite Musician for 2006 and 2007 in the Readers Choice' Best of Carson.

Diabetes information available


Learn diabetes basics and Insulin Resistance Syndrome 7-7:30 p.m. Jan. 9 at Carson Tahoe Specialty Medical Center. The program helps develop a game plan for preventing or delaying cardiovascular disease and other complications of diabetes.

Carson Tahoe offers affordable lab screenings on the second Tuesday of each month. Doctor's orders are not required. Included: Comprehensive metabolic and lipid panel, PSA, CBC, TSH, and Hemoglobin A1c. Appointments are required.

Auditions open for 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe'


Wild Horse Children's Theater announces auditions for their spring production of C.S. Lewis' The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.


Auditions for children ages 5 to 15 will be at 10 a.m. Jan. 26 at the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada, 813 N. Carson St.


Auditioners must call 887-0438 to sign up for an audition time slot. Come prepared with a short (1 minute or less) monologue, nursery rhyme or poem.


Some of the youths auditioning may be asked to read from the script.


Dance to live music at the senior center


The Carson City Senior Citizens Center will celebrate January with a dance 7-10 p.m. Jan. 12 with live music by Don and Nadine.


Dance lessons will be provided by Thane Cornell from 6-7 p.m. Cost of the dance is $6 per person. There will be a no-host bar and refreshments will be served.

Reno


Batmobile on display in Reno Museum


Made famous in comics, on TV and in movies, the unique Batmobile will be on display at the National Automobile Museum in Reno through June 2008.


Kids ages 18 and younger can see the amazing Batmobile for free on Batmobile Saturdays through the end of March when they are accompanied by a paying adult.


The Batmobile is on loan to the National Automobile Museum through June 2008, courtesy of the Joe Kaminkow family of Reno.


The museum is open daily to 4 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and $4 for children 6 to 18 years. Children age 5 and younger are free.

Carson Valley


Meeting scheduled for Young Chautauquans


An information meeting for Young Chautauquans will be 7 p.m. Jan. 8 at the Carson Valley Museum in Gardnerville.


Students from grades 4 through 12 are accepted from private, public and home schooling programs.


Group leaders are also needed to help mentor the Young Chautauquans. For information, call 782-2555.




Painters group to meet Jan. 9 in Minden


The Carson Valley Desert Brushes will meet at 6 p.m. Jan. 9 at the Johnson Lane Firehouse, 1450 Stephanie Way in Minden.


Painters of all levels and those who would like to learn to paint are welcome.
