New year, new chances to make things better

It would be easy to get an early start on complaining about all the problems that will haunt our cities, counties, state and country in 2008.

We've got a better idea - do something about them.

The upcoming year, 2008, also happens to be a major election year beginning with the caucuses on Jan. 19. Don't waste this new opportunity in Nevada to have a real influence on who will lead the country after Bush and his staff are off writing their biographies.

If you think the country is in need of change, or if you're happy with the way things are going, find the candidate that matches your view and get out there to the caucus site and support him, or her. Watch the Appeal in the coming weeks to learn everything you need to know to take part.

Challenges aren't limited to the national level. Maybe you're unhappy with the governor's budget cuts, maybe you think he didn't go far enough ... either way November will present the perfect opportunity to voice your opinion. Every Assembly seat and 10 Senate seats will be up for election.

That forum also is open on the local level. With all the issues simmering in Carson City, expect heated races for mayor (Mayor Marv Teixeira has vowed to run again) and the supervisor seats of Shelly Aldean and Richard Staub. On the school board, three positions will be open.

Oh yes, 2008 will be challenging on many levels. There couldn't be a better time for such a major election. Big problems require skilled leaders.

And if you want to be one of those special few who really make a difference, we have a suggestion for a great New Year's resolution - become a candidate.
