Extending our warmest wishes to readers in '08

On this first day of 2008, we at the Appeal find ourselves counting our blessings, and that is not an easy task. There are many.

It begins with the communities we serve, set in this, the most beautiful part of Nevada. Yes, several are struggling financially, just like many others around the country. The difference is that in some of those other places, optimism and hope have left town.

That's not the case in Carson City or surrounding communities. There is not a problem here - be it poverty, economic development, crime or budget shortfalls - that is not the focus of groups of citizens who are driven by pride and the determination to make their communities better.

Some would take the sometimes acrimonious debate on the important issues facing our city and region as a sign that things are worsening. We believe the opposite is true ... it's yet another sign that this is a place where people care.

When people stop caring, we'll start worrying.

There is much to look forward to in 2008, including the celebration of Carson City's 150th birthday, and the many positive changes that are happening all across the region.

We're grateful to you, our readers, for making the Appeal the place you turn to when you want to find out what's happening in your community, or when you want to express your opinion. We take that responsibility seriously and we are committed to serving our readers to the greatest of our ability in 2008 and beyond.
