WNCC baseball falls to Irvine

The Western Nevada Community College baseball team continues to be in unfamiliar territory after an 8-6 loss to Irvine Valley Community College in Southern California on Saturday.

WNCC (2-6) lost its sixth straight. "This is uncharted water right now with a six-game losing streak for sure," WNCC coach D.J. Whittemore said. "But it's early and we're learning about our club.

"I think we'll doa better job this week in practice. I don't think we're as bad as the record indicates."

Starting pitcher Josh Brink gave the Wildcats a solid effort, allowing four runs, but just one earned, in 4.1 innings. "He gave us a great effort," Whittemore more said.

Dan Grubbs came on in relief and allowed four runs in 3.1 innings. T.J. Wohlever came on to record the final out.

WNCC came back to tie the score 4-4 in the sixth inning when Logan Parsley singled, stole second and scored on Thomas Miller's RBI single. But Irvine scored two in the bottom of the sixth and two in the eighth to take an 8-4 lead.

Miller's two-run home run in the ninth provided for the final margin. Parsley continued his outstanding play as he was 3-for-3 with a sacrifice bunt and was also hit by a pitch.

Parsley has now been hit by a pitch nine times this season. "He's playing well," Whittemore said.

Also for WNCC, Miller had three hits, Kevin Schlange was 2-for-3 with a double, Pat Grennan had a double and an RBI and Chad Walling added a hit. The Wildcats outhit Irvine 10-6.
