Silver Springs

Karate classes offered for kids

The Lyon County Human Services Recreation Division is offering kids karate classes 6:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays in Silver Springs.

Tuesday classes will be at the Pony Express Room at the Silver Springs Elementary and Silver Stage Middle schools; and on Wednesday, in the cafeteria.

Cost is $5 per child and $2.50 for an additional child from a family.

Lyon Democrats host spaghetti feed

The Lyon County Democratic Central Committee will host a Spaghetti Feed and Dessert Auction 6 p.m. Feb. 24 at the Silver Springs Senior Center.

Tickets are $15 for adults, $7 for children ages 6-12 and free for children 5 and under.

The committee plans to invite all Democratic presidential contenders to this event. It is also seeking volunteers to help cook, set up, clean up, and provide raffle items.

Virginia City

Author to present lecture at hotel

Local author Alex Atreides will present a lecture on "History will Teach Us Nothing" at the Gold Hill Hotel at 7 p.m. Feb. 20. She will discuss her book of the same title.

The event will feature reading by the author, discussion of the book - and why it is wise to watch what you say at an archaeological dig. Call (775) 847-0111.

Piper's to host St. Valentine's Dance

Piper's Opera House will host an old-fashioned St. Valentine's Dance at 8 p.m. Feb. 16.

Couples can renew their marriage vows and receive a certificate and photo.

The event will feature Bobby Kittle and the Chix C Dicks along with the Buck and Bob Show, set to play country, pop, waltzes and requests for lovers on the Comstock.

There will also be a "Basket Auction," for which ladies are requested to bring basket lunches to be auctioned off as a benefit for the opera house.

Proceeds from the ticket sales will also benefit the opera house.

Tickets are $25 for couples and $15 for singles. The bar will open at 7:30 p.m.

John Tyson to play mine fundraiser

A benefit show to rebuild the Chollar Mine building will be held at Piper's Opera House at 2 and 6 p.m. Feb. 24. The historic mine building burned down last month along with irreplaceable artifacts, documents and photos.

The show will feature John Tyson and friends, pianist Squeek LaVake and Gary Greenlund, the Buck and Bob Show, danceSpirit, Glenn Buschine and Friends and more. Admission is $10.

St. Mary's to host an open-studio event

St. Mary's Art Center will hold an open studio 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday for anyone who wants to come and paint, draw, read, or enjoy the sun.

Senior Center to feature Cole Porter musical production

A group of performers from Truckee Meadows Community College will be at the Storey County Senior Center on Valentine's Day to perform a Cole Porter musical production.
