A memorial service for Capt. Alfred James Stewart, 85, a 24-year Gardnerville resident, will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Masonic Lodge, 113 E. Washington St.

Capt. Stewart died Feb. 5, 2007, at Carson Valley Medical Center in Gardnerville. He was born Dec. 2, 1921, in Patterson, N.J., to James Alfred Stewart and Nora Stuart.

He married Dorothy M. Stewart on Feb. 14, 2001, in Minden.

Before moving to Gardnerville, Capt. Stewart lived in Anaheim, Calif.

He was a high school graduate and worked as a commodore for Sealand Shipping.

He served in the U.S. Merchant Marines for 37 years, retiring as a captain in 1990.

He was a member of Mastermates & Pilots, the Genoa Masonic Lodge No. 12 for 54 years as a member and past master, York Rite and Scottish Rite. He was a Shriner.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Roslyn Stewart, granddaughter Jessica Stewart and grandson Andrew Stewart, all of Gardnerville.

Among his survivors are his wife of Gardnerville; sons James A. Stewart of Spring Valley, Calif., and John Stewart of Loveland, Colo.; daughters Ellen Jane Gray of Fremont, Calif., and Nancy McCort of Pensacola, Fla.; stepsons Stephen Fife of Orlando, Fla., and William Fife of Dallas; stepdaughters Karen Barnhill and Leslie Kittrell, both of Orlando; seven grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.

FitzHenry's Carson Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
