WNCC registering students for spring semester classes

Western Nevada Community College is registering students for the spring semester, which begins Jan. 22. More than 1,000 classes, including dozens of online offerings and interactive video courses, will serve students at WNCC's three campuses and five learning centers.

WNCC offers nearly 50 degrees and certificates, specialized training programs, transfer courses and community education classes. Registration can be completed online at www.wncc.edu.

Other class subjects and possible career paths include anthropology, art, astronomy, automotive mechanics, biology, business, chemistry, computers, construction, criminal justice, dance, drafting, early- childhood education, economics, emergency medical services, engineering, finance, geography, geology, graphic communications, health information technology, law, marketing, nursing, political science, psychology, real estate, surgical technology and more.

BAC Stage Kids to put on musical 'Bugsy Malone Jr.'

The BAC Stage Kids announce the performance of "Bugsy Malone, Jr.," a musical based on gangster movies of the silent era and the 1976 film "Bugsy Malone," beginning Jan. 19 for two weekends at the Brewery Arts Center.

A cast of youngsters 6 to 16 plays all the parts in this tongue-in-cheek tribute to the 1920s gangster flick.

The show is produced and directed by Christopher James, who directed the 2005 BAC Stage Kids production of "The Pied Piper." Leading the cast in the title role is Cameron Shirey, who played Aladdin earlier this year in Disney's "Aladdin, Jr."

Double cast in the part of Blousey Brown, Bugsy's romantic interest, are Melody Ricketts and BAC Stage Kids newcomer Hayley Pederson. They are backed by two casts of 70 cast members.

"Bugsy Malone, Jr." opens 7 p.m. Jan.19 in the Donald W. Reynolds Theatre at the Brewery at 449 W. King St Performances continue with 7 p.m. Jan. 20, 21, 26, 27 and 28 and 2 p.m. matinees Jan. 20, 21, 27 and 28.

Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for BAC members, seniors, students and kids.

Symphony starts rehearsals for February concert

The Carson City Symphony, conducted by David Bugli, will begin rehearsals 7:15 p.m. Wednesday in the Carson High School band room, 1111 N. Saliman Road. The rehearsals are for a performance on Feb. 25 at the Carson City Community Center.

The program will include "Concierto de Aranjuez" by Spanish composer Joaquin Rodrigo, featuring guest soloist Ana Vidovic on guitar, led by assistant conductor eric Gault. Other works on the program are "A Festival Prelude" by Alfred Reed, "Pavane" by Gabriel Faure and a piece by New York composer Bruce Craig Roter.

The Symphony has openings for strings, percussion, and other instruments. Auditions are not required. For information, call 883-4154.

BAC Stage Kids to hold auditions for 'The Wiz'

The BAC Stage Kids will holding auditions for "The Wiz," an adaptation of the classic children's novel "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" by L. Frank Baum.

Auditions will be 10 a.m. Feb. 3 in the Performance Hall at the Brewery Arts Center, 511 W. King St.

Auditions are open to all boys and girls ages 6-16.

Auditioners should prepare a one minute song and be prepared for movement and dance.

The show will run two weekends, April 6-15, in the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall.

The show will be directed by Andie Anderson, new director of the BAC Stage Kids program.
