An apparent chimney fire on a roof in Mound House was quickly knocked down by firefighters on Wednesday evening, but the damage was already done, said a Lyon County fire official.

"The building department will probably have to red-tag it," said Central Lyon County Fire Battalion Chief Bob Kielty of the 1979 double-wide mobile home at 42 Newman Lane. "Right now, we are just trying to salvage personal property."

Kielty said when fire crews arrived about 4:40 p.m., the roof surrounding the flue of a wood-burning stove was aflame.

The flames were quickly doused, but crews had to pull down the ceiling to quench fire in the attic. He said that, coupled with water damage, has made the home unlivable.

The American Red Cross was called to assist the family of four that lives in the home in the yard of GAH Auto Repair, one of many auto-salvage lots that line the south side of Highway 50. Kielty said although the flue seems to be the likely cause, the fire is under investigation.
