Dayton High reunion this month

Dayton High School class of 1997 will hold a 10-year reunion July 28.

The day includes an afternoon of fun and a picnic and barbecue from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at Zephyr Cove Resort. Cost is $10 for the family; bring your own refreshments.

A dinner-dance cruise on the MS Dixie II will be later in the day and is for adults only. Cost is $69. Reservations can be made by calling (775) 589-4908.

Stargaze at Dayton State Park

View the night sky and learn more about its fascinating features with the Astronomical Society of Nevada from 8:30-11:30 p.m. July 21.

Everyone will get a chance to see the moon in a telescope for a couple of hours before it sets. Right after sunset, Saturn will be visible, as will Venus.

Jupiter and its moons will be visible all night. Later as the moon sets high-powered telescopes will be used to view fainter objects such as nebulae, star clusters and galaxies. Bring a jacket as evenings can be cool.

Star charts and books will be on hand to use. Meet in the group pavilion. Call 687-5678.

Nature activities set for children

Children can take short nature hikes, make crafts and learn about plants and animals in the Dayton State Park as part of the Nature Buddies program Monday, Aug. 20, Sept. 17 and Oct. 22.

Listening library pilot program set

The Cultural and Performing Arts for Dayton Area and the Lyon County library system are beginning a pilot program to create a listening library and book drive. The listening library will be made up of CDs and DVDs that feature classical music, both instrumental and vocal, operas, jazz, big band and musical theater.

Crafters sought for craft fair to aid youth group

Dayton Venturing Crew 777, a scouting group of 14- to 21-year-olds in Dayton, is looking for crafters to participate in its craft fair Friday through Sunday at St. Mary's Art Center in Virginia City.

Proceeds will be used to help buy uniforms and help with programs over the summer.

Stagecoach

Riding clinic planned

Riding Clinic 101, conducted by Tony Sumner, 11225 Silver Lane, at Hamilton's Arena in Stagecoach, will be 9 a.m. July 14.

The clinic will teach the horse to flex with one rein at the standstill; teach the horse the one-rein stop, teach the horse to go the speed you want with the lightest cue (passenger lesson at walk, and trot); "stick to the fence" exercise for improved steering; yield hindquarter under saddle; yield shoulders and sidepassing.

Clinic fee is $15 for members, $25 for nonmembers; $5 less for those under 18. It is limited to 15 riders. You must prepay and pre-register. Memberships are available day of the clinic.

Horsemen to hold moonlight ride

There will be a moonlight ride/drive and potluck dinner July 28 at 11225 Silver Lane, at Hamilton's Arena in Stagecoach.

The potluck is at 7 p.m. and the ride/drive begins at 8:30 p.m.

This is for High Desert Horsemen members only; memberships are available the day of ride.

Dinner theater murder mystery at Piper's Opera House

"Dead End at Piper's" is a Dinner Theater Murder Mystery performed by Piper's Players. Dinner at 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays during July, except for July 12 when The Cool River Trio returns to Piper's.

Cool River Trio at Piper's on Saturday to kick off festival

The Cool River Trio returns to Piper's Opera House in Virginia City on Saturday.

The acoustic folk and bluegrass group performs music from the 1950s and 1960s from The Limelighters, the Kingston Trio, Ricky Nelson and more.

The trio will kick off the Bluegrass on the Comstock Festival to be held in Miner's Park.

Tickets are $15 for adults, free for kids. Bar opens at 6:30.

Moonlight ride on the V&T set

Wine and hors d'oeuvres by Secret Service Catering are on the menu for a "Moonlight Ride on the V&T" at 8:30 p.m. July 28.

Reservations are required and costumes are optional.
