The Reno City Council voted Wednesday to continue negotiations with the Tucson Sidewinders' owners to bring a Triple-A baseball franchise to Reno.

At Wednesday's city council meeting, Redevelopment Agency staff identified a proposed location for a new downtown stadium covering the area along Evans Avenue from Second Street north to the ReTRAC project. The proposed development would require relocating fire station No. 1, which now sits at Second Street and Evans Avenue.

The location would allow the historic Freight House building to be incorporated as part of the ballpark, possibly as a restaurant. The stadium would also be near the Truckee River downstream from the whitewater park.

Staff will continue to develop plans with SK Baseball, the Sidewinders' owners, on plans for the stadium that could provide opportunities for dining, office, retail and residential space around the area. Staff will bring proposals to the city council at its August 22 meeting.

No commitments have been made, but under the current timeline, it's possible for a Triple A team to be in Reno for opening day of the 2009 season.
