The Carson City Shade Tree Council is accepting nominations for the city's most beautiful evergreen.

Council Chairwoman Carol Roberts said the Certificate of Recognition Program, now in its second year, has turned out to be a success.

"Carson City residents have an interest in their environment," she said. "They understand the many benefits associated with trees."

Formerly known as the Hero Tree Program, its purpose is to encourage residents to nominate their favorite trees growing around the city.

The council will accept nominations through Sept. 1, with the winning tree being recognized at an awards ceremony in the fall.

Conifers, commonly known as evergreens, are the species being highlighted this year.

Nominations must include a photograph of the suggested tree. Only conifers in the front yards of private residences may be nominated.

Council members and certified arborists will select the winning conifer.

The program was the idea of former council member Mary Moline. The goal was to raise people's awareness of the benefits trees provide to a community - especially a high-desert community such as Carson City.

Residents are encouraged to nominate their favorite conifers by e-mailing them to carsonstc@gmail.com. Also use this e-mail address to obtain information about the program or other council activities.
