Norm Milz will be ordained and installed at 4 p.m. Sunday as pastor of Shepherd of the Sierra Lutheran Church, 3680 Highway 395. He has served as vicar there for the past year.

Milz was born in Detroit, and attended Lutheran elementary and high school there. He graduated from Concordia University in Seward, Neb., in 1975, and received a master's degree in music from the University of Illinois in 1979. He taught for 21 years at two Lutheran schools in Illinois, where he was also a principal.

In 1996, Milz, his wife, Char, and their children Rebekah and Nathan moved to California, where he served as principal of Prince of Peace Lutheran School in Fremont for three years.

They then moved to Lodi, Calif., where he served St. Peter Lutheran Church as director of music, worship and family ministry.

From 2004 to May 2006, Milz completed his studies at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis.

Milz's daughter, Rebekah, is assistant in communications and promotion for the church extension fund of the California-Nevada-Hawaii district for the Lutheran church in Livermore, Calif. His son, Nathan, has just completed his freshman year at Concordia University in Irvine, Calif.

Church collects 'Cans for the Kingdom' for funds

First Presbyterian Church is asking the community to donate unwanted aluminum cans to the church.

Receptacles for cans will be placed in front of the Family Life Center, at Division and Musser streets. The center is directly across from the church office, 306 W. Musser St.

First Presbyterian Church, Nevada's oldest church, is building a new sanctuary. As part of funding the project, which will benefit the community, directly and indirectly, the Rev. Bruce Kochsmeier is asking the community give the church "cans for the kingdom."

"Rather than placing their cans at the curbside, we ask people drop their cans off at the Presbyterian Church," Kochsmeier said.

"Beginning Monday, there will be a bin in front of the church during the day marked 'Cans for the Kingdom.'

"What a great way to redeem cans. After all, the church is in the redemption business."

Father Jerry says final Mass

Father Jerry Hanley will offer his last Mass at 9:30 a.m. Sunday at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Community, 3000 N. Lompa Lane.

After the Mass, a picnic will allow people to say good-bye to Father Jerry, who will remain at the event until the last person has left to ensure he has greeted everyone.

The picnic is hosted by the Women's Society, Knights of Columbus, parish staff and others.
