Bergman allows seven runs, one earned, in loss

Carson High graduate Dusty Bergman didn't receive much support from his Reno Silver Sox defense on Saturday against the Long Beach Armada at Long Beach.

Bergman (0-2) allowed seven runs, but just one earned, in taking the loss as he went 6.2 innings. The Armada went on to win their fourth game in as many nights, 8-5. Reno continued to be shaky defensively, committing five errors.

Reno started fast, scoring two runs in the first inning, but the Armada pulled ahead with one swing of Dan Trumble's bat. Jamie Martinez and Jeff Larue scored on Trumble's double, and Trumble reached third on the throw to the plate then scored on the wild throw by Chuck Sidlinger.

The Armada added another three runs in the second, thanks to an RBI double by John Kaplan, a wild pitch by Bergman, and a sacrifice fly by Larue.

Jeff Heaverlo struck out seven in his seven-inning, nine-hit performance for Long Beach. Marcel Vianna pitched the eighth and saw the Silver Sox inch closer. But a double play and a strikeout quickly stopped the bleeding for the Armada as they still led 7-4.

Jeff Larue hit his second sacrifice fly of the game in the bottom of the eighth to stretch the Armada lead to 8-4.

Closer Sean Buller gave up a run in the ninth, but found his control and struck out Cody Nowlin to hand Reno its 10th road loss. Heaverlo (1-2) earned the win.

Travis Tully had three hits, Bub Madrid had two hits and two RBI and Victor Hall and Sindlinger each had two hits for Reno.

The Silver Sox and Armada face off at 2:05 p.m. today in the finale of the four game series.
