James Wayne Phillips

A memorial service for James "Jim" Wayne Phillips, 90, a Smith Valley resident, will be 11 a.m. March 17 at the Smith Valley High School gym.

Mr. Phillips died March 4, 2007. He was born Jan. 7, 1917, in Fayetteville, Ark., to Rupert and Kate Phillips.

He was the superintendent of the Highway Department in Carson City, and a rancher.

He worked on the Frank List Ranch in Washoe Valley, the Lucky Livestock Ranch in Sierra Valley and the John Ascuaga Ranch in Smith Valley.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He enjoyed gardening and sharing the food from it.

He was preceded in death by his wife, "Al" Jensen Phillips.

Among his survivors are his son Bob Phillips of Carson City; sons and daughters-in-law Ron and Patti Phillips of Bakersfield, Calif., and John and Carol Hynd of Colorado Springs, Colo.; daughter Kathryn Duvall of Auburn, Wash.; daughter and son-in-law Jeanie Hynd and Bill Brooks of Divide, Colo.; sister Louise Tacker of Roseville, Mich.; brother and sister-in-law Roy and Donna Phillips of Lovelock; sister-in-law Lois Phillips of Cuyama, Calif.; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and several extended family members and close friends.
