CMSwrestlers solid at Dayton tourney

Gabe Pongasi, Connor Beattie and Jordan Luhrs were winners for the Carson Middle School wrestling teams at the Dayton Tournament on Saturday.

Pongasi won the eighth grade 105-pound title, Beattie won the eighth grade 135-pound title while Jordan Luhrs won the seventh grade 90-pound title. Other top finishers for Carson included:

Eight grade: 105 - Adam Whitt, second; 125 - Zach Herbert, fourth; 140 - Jimmy Weir, third; 175 - Harry Erhman, second, Tim Whitehead, third, Devon Heath, fourth. Seventh grade: 135 - Alex Azzam, fourth.

Laack helps George Fox to win in 4x400

Carson High graduate Terah Laack was part of the winning 4x400 relay for the George Fox University women's track team on Saturday in the Northwest Conference South Track Meet held on Portland, Ore.

George Fox, a Division III school in Oregon, posted six first-place finishes to finish second in the meet with 163 points behind Linfield, which finished with 192 points.

Laack, JulieKay Brown, Giffey-Brohaugh and Mollie Honan won the 4x400 in 4 minutes, 5.53 seconds.

Costella finishes 40th in NCAAmeet

Carson High graduate Lauren Costella finished her career at Stanford by competing in the 1,650-yard freestyle at the NCAA Swimming Championships on Saturday. Costella finished 40th in the event in 16 minutes, 49.49 seconds.

Virginia City softball splits in tournament

The Virginia City High softball team split another two games at the Yerington Tournament, finishing the event 2-2. Virginia City beat Big Pine, Calif., 15-2 and lost to Yerington's junior varsity 9-6 on Saturday.

Against Big Pine, Megan Culleton was 3-for-4 with four runs, two RBI, a double and a triple, Jami Lyle was 3-for-3 with four RBI and a triple, Brooke Bonnett was 2-for-3 with three RBI and a double, Gigi Glogorac was 1-for-3 with two RBI, Esha Singh ws 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run, Alexa Ballinger was 2-for-4, Cassie Athens was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Shaye Segale was 2-for-3 with two RBI. Bonnett pitched four innings for the win.

Against Yerington, the Muckers fell behind 9-0 in the second inning before their comeback fell short. Culleton and Ballinger were each 1-for-3, Glogorac was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Culleton and Bonnett were each 1-for-3 with an RBI. After a rough start, Bonnett settled down on the mound.

Wood fires hole-in-one at Silver Oak

Mike Wood recently shot a hole-in-one at Silver Oak Golf Club, using a 7-iron from the blue tee on the 144-yard 12th hole. Larry Wood, Kevin Johnson and Rod Rodriguez witnessed the ace.
