The students of the Native American Club at Carson High School are hoping to turn something sweet into a wild ride - and in the process gain some recognition.
The students are selling cookie dough to raise money for a barbecue and trip to Wild Island in Reno.
"We want to take everyone involved in the club to a barbecue at Lake Tahoe to say thanks and celebrate our hard work this year," said club adviser Debbie Painter.
There are 67 American Indian students at Carson High School, but the club also includes students from other backgrounds.
"They learn about our culture, and we learn about theirs," Painter said.
Dawneva Lundy-Bryan, CHS junior and president of the club, said the students hope to give more presentations in the future to dispel incorrect information about their culture.
"Someone thought when people died we buried them above ground because of the mounds at the Stewart Indian Colony," Dawneva said.
Freshman Leticia Fillmore said, "This boy asked me if it was true that we didn't have phones and used smoke signals."
Painter said the group looks forward to partnering with community and civic organizations and isn't limited to just spreading information at the high school.
But the students are focused on which kind of cookies to buy.
"Chocolate Chunk, that's definitely my favorite," Dawneva said.
Anyone wishing to purchase cookie dough should call Painter at 283-1846 by May 11.
