Carson City sheriff's deputies issued 24 citations in two hours during a crosswalk sting Wednesday.
The crosswalk enforcement took place at 1315 S. Carson St. where a deputy dressed in plain clothes walked across five lanes of Carson Street between Carl's Jr. and Burger King, said Deputy Jarod Adams in a press release.
Motorists were cited for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk. Citations carry a fine of $142.
According to the Nevada Department of Transportation, there have been two pedestrian fatalities in Carson City, one in 2005 and one in 2006.
In March, a Carson City man was arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor driving on a license suspended for driving under the influence, no proof of insurance and failing to yield to a pedestrian.
According to police reports, he struck and killed a puppy on a leash as a family was crossing College Parkway at Northgate Lane. The accident happened at dusk.
"Remember, if there is a pedestrian in a crosswalk in your lane of travel, you must yield to them. It is the law," Adams said. "Crosswalks can be very dangerous and we want to make them safer."
Overtime was paid for by a grant from the Office of Traffic Safety, Department of Public Safety.
