Katie Schaefer and Jared Powell, both residents of Tucson, Ariz., have announced their engagement.

Katie is the daughter of Donald and Lorie Schaefer of Carson City. She is a 1999 graduate of Carson High School and received a bachelor's degree in nursing from the University of Nevada, Reno in 2003. Katie is a "traveling" registered nurse assigned to Tucson Medical Center in the emergency department.

Jared is the son of Bruce and Becky Powell of Council Bluffs, Iowa. He is a 1998 graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School in Council Bluffs, and received a bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Nebraska, Omaha, in 2003. Jared is a graduate student majoring in geography at the University of Arizona.

Katie and Jared plan to marry Sept. 16 at the University of Nebraska, Omaha Alumni Center.
