Matt Williams, a 1983 Carson High graduate, has said he purchased more than $11,000 worth of human growth hormone in 2002 while he was a player with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The story was first reported in today's San Francisco Chronicle. Williams said he bought the HGH during spring training of that year to treat an ankle injury on the advice of a doctor.

Major League Baseball didn't institute a drug testing program for steroids until 2003 and didn't outlaw HGH until 2005.
