Carson relay team takes fourth

The Carson Tigersharks ended the second day of the Nevada State Short Course Swimming Championships on a high note when its 15-18 boys 400-yard medley relay team took fourth.

Jacob Cornwell, Garrett Clayton, Ryan Hogan and Matt Grunert finished in three minutes, 48.70 seconds. Another highlight came when 13-year-old Tim Grunert, swimming the 100 freestyle leg of the medley relay for Carson's B team in the consolation finals, finished his leg in 58.8 seconds.

Carson had numerous time drops on Saturday at the Carson Aquatic Facility. Clayton also had an outstanding effort in the 100 breaststroke, finishing fourth in 1:01.34. Paul Chang also had his best time in the 100 breaststroke, finishing in 1:06.04.

In the 15-18 girls 100 butterfly, Julie Asire took seventh in 1:01.52, dropping her time by four seconds. Tatum Boehnke also swam to her best time in the event in 1:02.97 and Samantha Ashmore dropped nearly five seconds off of her time, finishing in 1:03.50.

Asire also took seventh in the 200 free in 1:59.71, dropping three seconds off of her time. In the boys 200 free, Grunert was seventh in 1:51.19.

Many of Carson's younger swimmers also had outstanding efforts. The 11-12 girls 200 medley relay of Vanessa Rauch, Michaela Gillenwater, Abby Pittman and Elizabeth Everest was seventh in 2:19.99.

Other strong efforts came from Sophie Holmes in the 13-14 girls 100 breaststroke (1:20.3), Grunert in the 13-14 boys 100 breaststroke (1:09.00) and Michaela Gillenwater in the 11-12 girls 100 backstroke (1:12.1).

Kelsey Bradley also had an outstanding effort in the 8 and under girls 50 backstroke, finishing sixth in 41.39. Kaly Branco also had a five second drop in the event.

In the 8 and under girls 100 free, Mikel Flatley had a four second drop finishing in 1:45.1, Charlee Bradley had a best time of 43.33 in the 9-10 girls 50 breaststroke and Mikel Flatley had a 1 1/2 second drop in the 25 breaststroke, finishing in 26.2.

Other highlights included Charlee Bradley finishing the 100 back in 1:24.8 and Claire Adams finishing the 8 and under girls 50 back in 56.7. Spencer Lang also had an outstanding finish in the 8 and under 50 back (49.6) and Charlee Bradley finished the 100 individual medley in 1:27.3.

The boys 8 and under 100 medley relay of Nathanial Iannacchione, Spencer Lang, River Flatley and Nick Fischer finished fifth and the girls 8 and under 100 medley relay of Katie Fischer, Kelsey Bradley, Mikel Flatley and Branco finished fifth in 1:32.28.

In the combined team standings, Boulder City Henderson is pulling away with 2,831.50 points. The Clark County Sandpipers are second with 1,780 and Reno Aquatics is third with 1,307, Carson is eighth with 229.50 points.

In the individual standings, there appears to be a three-way race in 15-18 boys between Boulder City-Henderson's Zane Groth (64 points), Lakeridge's Michael Weiss (60) and Boulder City-Henderson's Martin Vanis (57).

Reno's Jordyn Green leads the 15-18 girls with 60 points. The meet continues today and Monday.
