Chris Bayer director of CASA - Court Appointed Special Advocates - gave a shout out for assistance for the Carson City Foster Parent Support and Recruitment Coalition. First and foremost, recognize that abuse and neglect of children does happen here in Carson City. Those children unfortunately have to be placed in a home other then their own to keep them safe.

This year Angel Tree for Angels will assist the children in foster care and you can set up a tree at your business. As usual, the first to step up in town to the plate is Carson City Toyota general manger Dana Whaley and owner Dick Campagni. Both these men have hearts bigger then Texas. I can't tell you how much they have done and continue to do to help children in our town. If you'd like to help as well by adding a tree at your place of business please call. These "Angels" truly do need a guardian.

While I'm speaking of big hearts in town, I have to mention the owner of the Carson Nugget Casino who generously continues to provide a "no questions asked" free thanksgiving meal, a tradition since 1957. That is their way of thanking all their regular customers as well as new customers that pop in the Nugget coffee shop on Thanksgiving Day from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Each year they provide between 3,200-3,500 free turkey or ham dinners for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Amazing! I know all the employees work very hard that day just to see everyone enjoying a warm meal. If you don't have anywhere to go or need a warm meal with all the thanksgiving trimmings, head down to the Carson Nugget. Thank you Alan Adams and your entire staff for all you do!

Danny Costella sent me an e-mail which unfortunately I didn't receive in time to assist the Knights of Columbus and St. Teresa's in their annual baby drive last weekend but it doesn't mean we still can't help. Not many people even know we have a Pregnancy Crisis Center in Carson City. The center helps babies and toddlers and accepts new and used items as long as they are approved. So, if you have cribs, strollers and baby furniture that can be given to help someone, give them a call. They would appreciate new bottles, formula, diapers for all ages including pull-ups, toys and especially clothing new or gently used to help kept the babies and toddlers warm. I know my children at that age never out wore a jacket or coat, so check the closets and see if you can help.

The American Association of University Women Educational Foundation has a long and distinguished history of advancing educational and professional opportunities for women in the United States and around the globe. One of the world's largest sources of funding for graduate women, the Educational Foundation provided more than 250 fellowships, grants and special awards to outstanding women in the 2007-08 academic year.

The Carson City AAUW group has a wonderful and very yummy fundraiser to help raise money to support projects such as introducing domestic violence laws to protect women and children, researching substance abuse among women and therapeutic approaches to the treatment of HIV infection, and developing improved micro credit access for women. I have to admit I had to purchase the pecan cluster and I can tell you that they are worth every penny.
