Wildcats sweep against Modesto

The Western Nevada College baseball team swept a doubleheader at Modesto (Calif.) Community College in a pair of scrimmages on Friday, winning the opener 8-3 and the nightcap 11-1.

Wildcat coach D.J. Whittemore said starter Kyle Starratt pitched "three very effective innings" in the opener. Starratt allowed an unearned run. Javy Perez allowed an unearned run over three innings and Josh Suarez pitched two scoreless innings.

Logan Parsley reached base all five times he came to the plate as he went 3-for-3 with a double, two walks, three runs and three stolen bases. Chuck Howard reached base four times as he had a hit, was walked twice, hit once and scored two runs. Lance Ray had a single and an RBI sacrifice fly, Andrew Reidd had a two-run triple and Kyle Gutchewsky added a hit.

In the nightcap, starter Jordan Blanchard allowed one run over two innings. James Nygren struck out the first four batters he faced and didn't allow a hit over three innings and James Crockett pitched two scoreless innings.

Jerome Pena had three hits, including a double and a triple and three runs, Andrew Reid had a hit, two RBI and two runs, Brian Barnett went 2-for-4 with a double and Gutchewsky and Darren Bruhns each had an RBI single.

The two teams will play again at 9:30 a.m. today at Modesto.
