Special Olympics needs volunteers for Nevada Day race

Volunteers are needed to control intersections along the route of the Special Olympics Nevada Day Fun Run and Walk. This is a great way to start off Nevada Day activitiesÐmixing with the runners during registration and check in at the Carson Nugget, going out to your assigned corner to encourage and protect the walkers and runners, followed by the awards brunch at the Nugget. Stroke screening offered Wednesday

Residents living in the Carson City region can be screened to reduce their risk of having a stroke. Life Line Screening will be at the Plaza Conference Center, 211 E. Ninth St., beginning at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Pre-registration is required.

Screenings are fast, painless and low cost. They involve the use of ultrasound technology, and scan for potential health problems related to blocked arteries.

The cost for a Wellness Package of all four screenings (including free osteoporosis screening) is $129.

Fundraiser to benefit Nevada Day Pow Wow

There will be an Indian Taco Sale 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Wednesday at 2900 S. Curry St. All proceeds go toward the Nevada Day Pow Wow. Free deliveries with five or more orders. Call 351-4870 or 443-7460.

Talk on White Pass and Yukon Route at railroad museum

John Frink of the Nevada State Railroad Museum will present an illustrated talk about the White Pass and Yukon Route 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Nevada State Railroad Museum.

In 1900, the White Pass and Yukon Route was built through some of the most spectacular scenery and difficult terrain in Alaska. It provided an all-weather route to Whitehorse, jumping off point for the Klondike goldfields in Canada's Yukon Territory.

Frink was one of 120 participants in the four-day White Pass Rail Spectacular. He is the administrative assistant for the Nevada State Railroad Museum.

New art exhibit open at college

Pyrotechniques II," an interplay of form, surface and fire by Joe Winter, will be on display in the Main Gallery at Western Nevada College's Bristlecone Building through Nov. 9. The art exhibit features four different firing techniques: Raku, gas-fired stoneware, wood-fired stoneware, and wood-fired salt glazed stoneware. An artist's reception in the gallery will be 4:30-6 p.m. Oct. 15. Winter will demonstrate his techniques for throwing and Raku glazing at a workshop in Aspen 213, the WNC ceramics studio, following the reception. Call 445-3000.

Deadline Thursday for Footprint Association meeting

Reservations for the October meeting of Carson Valley International Footprint Association should be made by Thursday. The dinner meeting will be at the Nugget in Carson City on Oct. 18. Guest speaker will be Nevada archivist Guy Rocha. Nevada history will be his topic.
