SOUTH LAKE TAHOE - Autopsy results of human remains found last week at Barton Meadow could be released today, officials said. The death is being treated as "suspicious."
The remains, discovered by a resident walking in the meadow, had been disturbed by coyotes, according to South Lake Tahoe police officers who were at the scene.
"Due to the condition of the body, we are unable to make any kind of identification. We are following some leads, and once the autopsy is done, we can have some more answers," said Detective Larry Olsen, El Dorado County's deputy coroner.
Authorities had not officially concluded the remains are those of a woman.
Officers and witnesses at the scene last week, however, said the remains are that of a woman.
The autopsy could determine a cause of death.
"At this point we don't know how the individual died," Olsen said. "We have to treat (the case) as suspicious until it is ruled out. The autopsy will hopefully help us with that."
