Cathleen Allison/Nevada Appeal Carson Middle School Principal Sam Santillo has been honored as administrator of the year by the Nevada Association of School Boards.
The Nevada Association of School Boards has chosen two Carson City educators for its annual honors.
Carson City School District Superintendent Mary Pierczynski received the distinguished service award for her work on behalf of all school districts during the 2007 Legislature. She was president of the superintendents association this year.
In that capacity, the association award states, she "has served as a tireless advocate for the youth of Nevada."
The other Carson educator honored was Sam Santillo, principal of Carson Middle School. He was named school administrator of the year. In addition to his work accommodating large population of English-language learners and disabled students, the association pointed out that Santillo and his staff are dealing with a $12 million reconstruction of the school while students are attending classes.
"Not only does Mr. Santillo serve as principal, but his daily duties include being an architectural assistant, safety officer and construction manager during this revitalization process," the award points out.
In addition, Douglas County trustees were singled out as school board of the year.
"Each member of this board brings a diverse perspective to his/her duties yet works together through cooperative collaboration and with mutual respect to address the needs of children, teachers and schools in Douglas County," the award stated.
The association also elected new officers at the meeting last weekend in Reno. Sharla Hales of Douglas County is the new president with Irene Chachas of White Pine as president-elect and Jim Lemaire of Carson City vice president.
Nancy Hollinger of Washoe County was named legislative chairwoman for the organization.
