Carson City


Deadline for mining essay contest Monday


HE-5 Resources, Corp. is sponsoring a Scholarship Contest in Carson City, Douglas, Lyon and Storey counties and will award five scholarships of $2,500 each to elementary school students. The awards will be based on the answers to the following question: "Why is mining important to Nevada?"


The contest deadline is Monday.


Guest to join Carson Symphony in concert


The Carson City Symphony will open its 24th season at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Carson City Community Center theater with "From Vienna to Area 51: A Musical Journey."


The Symphony, conducted by David Bugli, will feature violin virtuoso Andrew Sords in a performance of Beethoven's Violin Concerto. Pre-concert entertainment by Wild Horse Children's Theater begins at 3 p.m. in the lobby, and a concert preview begins at 3:15 p.m. in the Sierra Room.


Tickets are $12 general admission, $10 for seniors, students and Symphony Association members, and free for children age 16 and under. Tickets are available in advance at the Brewery Arts Center, 449 W. King St., or Activitytickets.com, or at the door on the day of the performance. Season tickets also are available from the Symphony at 883-4154.


Museum to display famous locomotive, the Inyo


The Nevada State Railroad Museum will hold a special showing of famous Virginia & Truckee locomotive No. 22, the Inyo, in conjunction with the annual Nevada Railroad History Symposium. This is the only time this year the Inyo will be brought out of the museum building for viewing and photographing.


Visitors will see the Inyo in motion when volunteers operate the locomotive on the museum's tracks from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday.


Train rides also will be offered, using Nevada State Railroad Museum locomotive No. 8. Fares for steam-ups are $5 for adults; $4 for seniors 65 and up; $3 for children 6-11 and children 5 and under ride free.


Open daily from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., the Nevada State Railroad Museum is on Highway 395 at the south end of Carson City at the intersection of Fairview Drive. Call 687-6953.


Children's weight training equipment available


Carson City Aquatic Facility has youth weight training equipment designed for kids 8 years old and above. Children can work out and improved strength on safe and colorful weight resistance machines.


Weight room also includes treadmills, stair steppers, and adult weight equipment to make it a great place for the whole family to work. Use of weight room is included in pool admission fee.


Kids 8 through 13 must be accompanied by an adult. For information, call 887-2242 or stop by the Carson Aquatic Facility at 841 N. Roop St.


Genoa


Ghost walk takes over Genoa

Vendors needed for Christmas Faire


Calling all artists, craftsmen, and antique dealers to be a part of the annual two day Genoa Country Christmas Faire. The event is scheduled 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Dec. 8-9. Vendor spaces are $100 which includes an 8-foot-by-6-foot space for both days of the event. For information contact the Town of Genoa at 782-8696.


Storey County


Flu shots available Monday


The Nevada State Health Division's Community Health Nursing program in collaboration with the Storey County Fire Department will be providing a season influenza vaccination clinic 2-7 p.m. Monday. Vaccine will be available for children over the age of 36 months and for adults. The cost is $20 per shot.


Bring Medicaid/Medicare or Nevada Check Up Card. The fire department is located at 145 C Street. An appointment is not needed. For information, contact 586-7235.


Smith Valley


Harvest Auction for churches


Smith Valley Catholic Church and Smith Valley Methodist Church will hold their Annual Harvest Auction today. Doors open at 10 a.m. with a craft boutique, snack bar, silent auction, country kitchen and face painting for the young.


A handmade quilt, framed silver dollars, dinner for two at the Carson Valley Inn, handmade doll and several themed baskets will be raffled. Tickets are available for $10 for a book of 10. The auction will begin at 11:30 a.m. under the direction of Dr. Greg "Lightning" Williams. For information, call 465-2516 or 465-2152.
