Senator boys soccer wins back-to-back titles

The Carson High boys soccer has gone back-to-back in the Sierra League.

Carson wrapped up sole possession of first place in the Sierra League with a 4-1 win over North Valleys at home on Monday. Coupled with Douglas High's 1-1 tie against South Tahoe at Douglas, the Senators won sole possession of the league title for the second straight year.

The Senators finished 10-1-3 while the Tigers finished 10-3-1. In the tie, the Vikings got what they needed to finish third at 7-3-4. Both Reno High and Wooster both won on Monday to finish at 7-4-3. The Huskies and Colts will play each other this week to determine the league's fourth and final spot into the Northern 4A playoffs.

Carson will enter the playoffs as the league's No. 1 seed and will likely open with Spanish Springs at 6 p.m. Saturday at Damonte Ranch.

"We talked about that how it would be nice to do that," said Carson coach Jason Koop about winning back-to-back league titles. "It's nice winning the league title outright."

But Carson obviously has a bigger goal of winning the zone title. "We've to got to focus one game at a time right now and not look past anybody," Koop said.

Carson opened the scoring against North Valleys with 15 minute left in the first half. Chris Brown beat a defender and had a one-on-one with the goalie. The goalie was able to make the save with the ball deflecting away about 25 yards.

Before the goalie could even get back up, Adam Updegrove sent a rocket of a shot for the goal. "It was a very, very nice shot on Adam's part," Koop said.

Brown beat the defense again and sent a crossing pass to Drew Good. The left-footed Good took the pass in the air with his right foot and sent it into the goal.

Updegrove scored again with five minutes left in the half to give Carson a 3-0 halftime lead. Matt Tillitt scored early in the second half to make it 4-0. North Valleys scored with about two minutes left to break up the shutout.

DOUGLAS 1, SOUTH TAHOE 1

Douglas (16-4-1) will open the playoffs with Elko at 2 p.m. Saturday at Damonte Ranch. After a cautious and scoreless first half, the two teams opened up in the second half.

"The first half left a little bit to be desired," Douglas coach Milko Vasquez said. About the second half, Vasquez said, "I think it was a really exciting game."

South Tahoe scored with 12 minutes left, Tigers answered with two minutes left when Kyle Gardner scored on a shot from 25 yards that Vasquez described as a "beautiful ball."

Jose Alcaraz made seven saves including two shots that "were going into the goal," Vasquez said. "I thought Jose did a very good job in the goal."

Edgar Arceo, Brian Jaggard, Ray Kaffer, Robbie Forest and Oscar Gonzalez all also played well for Douglas.

CHS JVS 8, NORTH VALLEYS 0

Carson finished the season at 16-1 and finished first in league. Ian Gunn scored the first two goals, one on an assist from Miguel Camacho, Guillermo Alanzo scored on an assist from Aldo Del Razo, Carlos Galvan scored on an assist from Camacho, Gunn scored on an assist from Luis Gonzalez, Luis Aguilar scored on an assist from Gonzalez, Javier Barrios scored on an assist from Victor Romero and Pedro Chavez scored on an assist from Ivan Reyes.

Chavez and David Yanez combined to post the shutout at goalie. Defenders Aguilar, Skylar Spencer, Gunn, Nate Eng, Del Razo and Gustavo Gonzalez helped post the shutout.
