CHS volleyball wins; Douglas beats Reno

The Carson High volleyball team made things interesting in its final regular season match, but managed to pull out a 25-23, 25-17, 16-25, 22-25, 17-15 win a Wooster on Thursday.

Carson finished 9-5 in the Sierra League and will go into the Northern 4A playoffs as the league's No. 4 seed. The Senators will play McQueen a week from Friday at Galena.

The Senators actually had to come back in the fifth game, with Nikki Keller putting down a kill on match point.

"Nikki played well in the middle," Carson coach Shana Wilkins said. "I was happy we were able to pull it out.

"We kind of took a nap for a while. They (Wooster) played really well. We passed well. But our defense just struggled. For some reason we weren't able to move on defense."

DOUGLAS 3, RENO 2

Douglas won the showdown for the Sierra League title with a 25-20, 23-25, 17-25, 25-21, 15-13 win at Reno on Thursday. The Tigers (31-4) will be the league's No. 1 seed into the playoffs at 13-1 while Reno finished at 12-2.

Taryn Williams had 16 kills, 12 digs, seven points, one ace and eight blocks, Jourdan Burke had 12 kills, seven points, five digs, two aces and four blocks, Jessica Waggoner had six kills and two digs, one assist and 17 blocks, Allie Hughes had four kills, one assist and seven blocks, Bridget Maestretti had four kills, , three points, five digs and 18 blocks, Megan Mitchell had four kills, eight points, 39 assists, four digs and 11 blocks, Melissa Brown had two kills, one dig and a block, Alyssa Todd had one kill, two digs and one block, Mary Lombino had one assist, 15 digs, 12 points and five aces, Jordan Marsh had one assist and one dig and Mysta Townsell had three assists, nine points, 11 digs and two aces.

Douglas won the junior varsity match 2-0 and the freshmen match 2-0.

GALENA 3, MANOGUE 1

The Grizzlies ended the regular season with an impressive win over the High Desert League's second place team, winning 22-25, 25-23, 25-10, 25-16. Galena (8-4 in league), likely clinched third in league.

Rebecca Pate had 11 kills and 15 digs, Emily Aguiar had eight kills and nine blocks, Brooke Keever had seven kills and 11 digs, Bree Crook had 16 assists and three aces, Megan Fincher had 16 assists and two aces, Anna Mestre had 18 digs, Allison Smith had 10 blocks and Emily Burns added six blocks for Galena.

CHS JVS 2, WOOSTER 0

Carson finished at 17-2 and second in league with a 25-12, 25-11 win. Brittney Wyatt had five aces and six points, Alexis Church had three points and one dig, Skylar Peterson had two aces, eight points and two kills, Meagan Nuckolls had five aces, 13 points, six assists and two digs, Sara Anderson had one kill and five assists, Shelby Price had five blocks, Karli Dodge had one point and four kills, Sarah Kerkla had two aces, five points, one dig, one block, two kills and an assist, Natalia Pecorilla had two aces, four points and two kills and Kendra Krupp had two points, one dig and two kills.

CHS FROSH 2, WOOSTER 0

Carson finished 17-1 after beating Wooster 25-20, 26-24. Jazmine Stokes had two aces and two kills, Elizabeth Bennett-Doran had one ace, Breann Perry had one ace and eight assists, Makayla Drahos had one ace and one kill, Bailey Young had two aces, four assists and two kills, Kleine Hernandez had two aces and four digs, Jeanette VanSickle had two kills and two blocks, Ashley Elliott had one kill, one dig and one block, Kristi Shaffer had four points and Elysse Virden added one ace, four kills and three blocks.

"We had a very successful season," Carson coach Robyn Christl said. "I'm proud of them."
