The Carson City Board of Supervisors will meet 8:30 a.m. Thursday in the Sierra Room of the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William St.

Agenda items include:

• The limited hiring freeze on city workers approved Oct. 18. The freeze exempted fire fighters, sheriff deputies and dispatchers. The freeze was specifically for "non-critical" workers, something board members said they are working on defining.

• $150,000 in parks improvements including $13,500 for new fitness equipment at the Aquatics Facility and $17,500 for portable toilet enclosures and landscaping improvements at Governor's Field.

Hearing on teacher's appeal delayed

An appeal by fired Virginia City High School teacher William Beeson will probably be heard Nov. 15 at the next Storey County School Board of Trustees meeting.

Beeson, a popular English and Theater Arts teacher, was placed on administrative leave in May after being accused of improper conduct with a student. He was fired in August, but no charges were filed against him. A petition signed by 113 of 151 students at the high school has been presented to the board.

An appeal was to have been heard Oct. 25, but was postponed at the request of Beeson's attorneys, who requested more time. That meeting was canceled.

School Superintendent Rob Slaby has said the matter would be on the Nov. 15 school board agenda.

If the termination is upheld by the board, Beeson could seek arbitration.

Mobile centers coming to help those facing foreclosure

Five mobile resource centers will be set up throughout Nevada to address the foreclosure crisis.

"Nevada is facing a foreclosure crisis," said U.S. Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev. "It's important that local, state, federal, and agencies come together to identify ways to help Nevadans. The goal of these mobile resource centers is to provide a place where people in danger of losing their homes can get help. I will continue to do all I can to help address this foreclosure crisis."

Credit counselors, lenders, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and representatives from Reid's office will come together to help Nevadans.
