The Carson City Junior Pee Wee youth football team ran away with a 25-0 win over the Sparks Raiders in the first round of the playoffs on Friday.
The offensive line controlled the line of scrimmage with blocking by Josh Breem, Jaremiah Abbott, Asa Carter, Cole Catlin, Jesse Garcia, Jesse Lopez, Logan Menzel, Brady O'Keefe, Mason Harmon, Jonas Papez, and Jonathon Kondor. The blocking made it look easy for Josiah Pongasi to rush up the middle for a 45 yard touchdown on the first possession of the game.
Later in the first quarter, Pongasi returned the Raider punt 45 yards bouncing off tackles and dragging another into the end zone for his second score of the game. Quarterback Colby Brown dropped back and threw the extra point conversion to a wide open Robert Carmazzi.
The defense was again stout giving up only three first downs and posting its fourth shutout in as many games. The defensive line of Samuel Mercado, Christian Tercero, Zachary Carrubba, Kye Catlin, Zachary Mills, Corey Reid, and Cody Toreson controlled the line of scrimmage.
Catlin had his best game of the year with several tackles for losses. Tristian Bakkedahl, Brandon Maffei, Sabian Harting, Caden Lehman, O'Keefe, Pongasi, Kyle Sharp, Walker Plaut, Nolan Shine, Nicholos Mohlenkamp, and Kaleb Wold all also played well defensively.
Wold caused 2 fumbles. The defense again made its presence know when in a gang tackle Sharp stripped the ball and returned it 40 yards for the score.
"We had some key plays and the entire defense played great," defensive coach Paul Harting said.
In the second half, Kenny Frank had several key runs up the middle including a 30 yarder and an important fourth down run for 15 yards and the first down. That set up another dash down the sideline by Pongasi for a 45 yard touchdown run.
"We played like we practiced, and controlled both sides of the ball," offensive coach Eddy Brown said.
The Senators advanced to the second round of the playoffs where it will travel to face the Douglas Tigers at 8 p.m. this Friday.
