Carson runners shine at Reed

The Carson High boys and girls cross country teams turned in impressive efforts at the Reed Invitational on Friday.

Carson's boys took third behind Galena and Reno while the CHS girls placed second behind Reno. Galena's Brian Tibaduiza won the boys race to lead the Grizzlies to the team title while Reno took second.

Galena, Reno and Carson figure to be the Northern 4A's top teams. South Tahoe didn't compete in the meet. Reno, Carson and South Tahoe figure to be the Northern 4A's top three girls clubs. Carson's junior varsity boys also took second in the meet.

Richard Shroy had another impressive effort as he took sixth overall in the boys race, covering the 3.1-mile course in 18 minutes, 12 seconds. Carson coach Pete Sinnott said he believed eight of the state's top 10 runners competed in the race.

Also for Carson, Wade Smith ran his best race of his high school career, Sinnott said, as he was Carson's second fastest runner. Smith took 12th in 18:45. Nick Schlager was 15th in 19:30, Caleb Carter was 27th in 19:23 and Zack Mapes was 33rd in 20:03. Logan Philippi and Brent Moyle also ran well for Carson.

For Carson's girls, Yvonne Hollett was sixth in 22:22. Jenny Mital also ran the best race of her high school career, Sinnott said, to finish eighth in 22:44. Christy Works was 11th in 23:30 and Gloria Sosa was 27th in 24:42.

The Senators were also without one of their best runners in Amanda Gordon, who Sinnott described as having a "really bad blister."

For Carson's JV boys, Ethan Graber was sixth, covering the 2.4 mile course in 14:45. David McMasters was seventh in 14:48 and Evan Richards was eighth in 15:02. For Carson's JV girls, Kat Vonrumpf was fifth in 18:23.

Sinnott said he was pleased with the way his runners handled the 93-degree heat. "The kids really hung tough," Sinnott said.
