It has been six years since al-Qaida sent planes into the World Trade Towers in New York City, the Pentagon, and a field in Pennsylvania (thanks to those who gave their lives by foiling the attempt to fly into the Capitol or the White House). Today, we salute all those who fight terrorism all over the world, and decry those who do not raise their voices against the terrorists. The successes and failures of this war are well documented, so we now hope for leadership to conquer the radicals and get us back to some kind of normalcy once more.

On a positive note, attend the 10th annual Basque Festival at Fuji Park on Sunday. It runs from 11-3, and features a Mass with Father Chuck at noon, and wonderful food at 1. It's $25 in advance or $30 at the gate (call 882-1968 for details). Children under 16 get in free. Such a deal. All proceeds benefit St. Teresa's School, and it's lots of fun for everyone. You don't even have to be Basque. Rumor has it that Father Jerry will be the bartender (after all, he has a lot of experience pouring altar wine every week). Hooray.

Quick notes: Congrats to the City of Carson for having Roop Street repaved. It looks greaaaaaat. And thanks to Thomas, the manager of Payless Shoes for being so nice and saving M a pair of gold slippers before they sold out. Happy B-days to Alexis Lequerica who turns 11 this week, and to Christi Schmid and Kim Johnston, who don't. Also, many happy returns to Jobeth Machal and Dan Clinger on their upcoming wedding Saturday.

That shocking Mollie Sanders sent us this one: "The guys went deer hunting one week, but nobody wanted to be in the same tent with Don because he snored so loudly. In the end, the other guys decided it was only fair to take turns. The first night, Norm took over, but the next morning he came out of the tent looking like hell, his hair all messed up and his eyes bloodshot. 'What happened?' the other guys asked. Norm replied, 'He snored so badly, I just sat up and watched him all night.' The next night was Dick's turn, and, unfortunately, the same thing happened. The third night was Slick's turn. But, at breakfast the next morning, he came down from the tent all bright eyed and bushy tailed and said, 'Good morning all.' Dick and Norm couldn't believe it. 'What happened,' they asked? 'Well, Don got ready for bed, so I went and tucked him into bed and kissed him good night. That way, Don sat up and watched ME all night.'"

Carson City's own Mike Schellin will be inducted into the University of Nevada's Hall of Fame on October 5th at the Silver Legacy in Reno. During his collegiate career, Mike had a 32-0 record, won three boxing titles and many awards as "outstanding boxer." Today he owns Nevada Insurance, sits around the Crackerbox in his rocking chair and talks about the old days. Come to think of it, the last part of that sentence MIGHT be wrong ... in any case, we're all proud of him. "And the winner is ... Mike Schellin."

Speaking of boxing, the Carson City Boxing Club needs your help. They receive no outside funds, other than donations, and ask if you could lend a hand to help kids who might otherwise go down the wrong path. If you can help them in any way, please call their coach, Francisco Peralta, at 246-4686, or go see them at their gym at 3579 Hwy. 50 E, suite 219 between 5:50-8 p.m. You'll be welcome. Judy Webster wrote and suggested that it would be wonderful if some CHS seniors took on a needy senior (from the Senior Center) for their senior project. Let's hope they do, because it sounds like a very worthwhile idea.

The annual Carson City River Clean-up will take place on Saturday, Sept. 22. The Kiwanis Club and many other groups help every year to pick up the junk idiots throw away there ... old cars, mattresses, you name it. Check-in time is 8 a.m. at the BLM office at 5665 Morgan Mill Road. Please call Mark Struble (885-6000), Ron Bowman (885-7302) or Bill Knight (882-3075) to sign up. Those under 18 need a permission slip (at BLM). Food, T-shirts, snacks and water will be furnished to all. Please come and help keep our river pristine. Even the birds and fish thank you.

Terri Ozawa was at ZBistro the other day and bought a Carson Calendar Girls calendar. The people next to her were so interested that they bought two and are taking them back to Wales (or was it Scotland?) for friends. Whooda thunk that it would go over to where the "original" calendar girls lived? Wow ... international fame ... HA.

Empirical question ... why can't the Tin Cup Tea group and the Boy's and Girls' Club get together and hold their functions on DIFFERENT days? Seems to us they'd get a lot more people at each if they did. Have a great week.
