Authentic Mexican food, music and dance will greet Carson City residents Saturday at the 11th annual Salsa y Salsa Festival at the Legislative Mall.
The event, slated for 10 a.m.-5 p.m., is designed to raise money and awareness for Nevada Hispanic Services - a five-person agency that is the front-line for Hispanic families needing assistance.
Over the last decade, the fundraiser has grown from a few dozen revelers to 6,000-plus attendees.
"We're hoping for much more this year," said Marylou Heredia, a client advocate at Nevada Hispanic Services. "Our office is a referral agency and the first stop for a lot of people.
"This is our biggest fundraiser."
Food from Lady Tamales and several local churches will be served and residents will be treated to folkloric dancing. The event's highlight, a salsa dance competition, will take place in the afternoon, Heredia said.

Five dens from local Cub and Boy Scouts Pack 341 will host an annual popcorn sale Saturday at Safeway, 2035 N. Carson St.
Dan Bowler, leader of den 10 in pack 341 said residents can not only buy popcorn to take home - but to send to troops serving in the Middle East.
"Really, being able to send popcorn to our soldiers is our greatest honor," Bowler said. "It's not flak jackets, but it's something to say 'thank you' and to let them know our people back home thinking of them."

Daniel's first-ever Golf Tournament to fight brain cancer will be at Dayton Valley Golf Course, 100 Palmer Drive. Eight-year-old Daniel has a malignant astrocytoma and the fundraiser will help pay medical expenses. The fundraiser includes golf, lunch and raffle tickets and silent auction items are available.

Hoping to raise some money for a new van, which will be used to benefit veterans in need of transportation, Carson City Harley-Davidson is hosting a poker run to benefit the Disabled American Veterans.

Dayton will hearken back to a simpler time this weekend, with the return of Dayton Valley Days. The two-day event incorporates various Dayton locations. It includes the Gold Creek Show and Shine car show from 10:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday; Comstock Cowboys concerts at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Dayton Station; various food, crafts and music throughout the weekend. Proceeds benefit Lyon County Sheriff's Search and Rescue.
