Wildcats sweep a doubleheader

The Western Nevada College baseball team swept a doubleheader in a pair of scrimmages against Feather River Community College on Saturday at John L. Harvey Field, winning the opener 17-0 and the nightcap 8-4.

In the opener, Wildcat pitchers scattered three hits in combining on the shutout. Donald Broderick allowed all three hits in pitching three scoreless innings.

Starting pitcher Kyle Starratt retired all nine batters he faced through the first three innings, striking out two. Javy Perez pitched two scoreless innings and Logon Odom pitched a scoreless inning, striking out one.

The Wildcats jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning on the strength of Lance Ray's RBI single, Chuck Howard's two-run double and Travis Feiner's RBI double that made it 5-0. Western Nevada added five more runs in the second to make it 10-0. Kyle Farrell had an RBI sacrifice fly and Andrew Reid had a two-run single during the rally.

In the third, Ray had an RBI double as the Wildcats took a 12-0 lead. Kyle Gutchewsky tripled and scored on Parsley's RBI single to make it 13-0 in the fourth.

In the fifth, after Brian Barnett walked, Zack Earl, a North Medford High player who the Wildcats are recruiting, belted an RBI triple to make it 14-0. Earl finished the game at shortstop.

Ray doubled and Reid hit an RBI single to make it 15-0 in the sixth and Reid's two-run home run in the eighth finished the scoring.

Ray had four hits, Reid had three hits, Howard had another double for two hits, Gutchewsky and Parsley each had two hits and Cliff Shepard and Victor Nunez each added a hit.

In the nightcap, Jerome Pena's RBI sacrifice fly gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead in the first. After Feather River took a 3-1 lead in the second, Logan Parsley's two-out, two-run double tied the score 3-3.

Logan Odom's RBI sacrifice fly gave the Wildcats a 4-3 lead in the third. In the fourth, Western Nevada put together a two-out rally with Parsley hitting a single and stealing second. Brett Moravec and Lance Ray then followed with RBI singles to make it 6-3. Feiner's two-out, two-run single made it 8-4 in the eighth.

James Nygren allowed one run over three innings, Jordan Blanchard pitched three scoreless innings and Wes Osmer finished up, pitching a scoreless ninth. Parsley finished a huge day as the leadoff hitter, going 3-for-4 with a double and reaching base four times. He finished the day with four stolen bases. Moravec and Ray each had two hits and Odom added a single.

The two teams will play again at noon today at Feather River.
