120 YEARS AGO

Yesterday the flags of the weather service were flown for the first time from the Capitol dome. Hoisted at 9 a.m. daily, except Sunday, the flags will indicate the weather for the following 24 hours. A white flag means clear weather. A blue flag, means rain or snow. A black triangular flag above the other flags means the temperature is going up, while below means down. When there is no black flag, the temperature will be stationary. A white flag with a black square means decidedly colder weather.

100 YEARS AGO

The mines at Bodie have closed and until an agreement is reached between the surface miners and the owners the place will be a "dead" town. The surface hands are out for a nine-hour day and increased pay. Underground workers were granted an eight-hour day some time ago.

70 YEARS AGO

Jake Martin, Sierra Pacific Power Co. employee, was killed instantly near Cave Rock this afternoon when he, in some unknown manner, came in contact with a live wire. Manager F. Shannon of Glenbrook Inn telephoned word to Carson this afternoon of the event.

50 YEARS AGO

League leading Lions took a 3-0 licking from 20-30 in Thursday night Service Club bowling, but still hold first place by one game. Frank Berger's 206-510 was high for Lions, while 20-30 was led by Bob Jacques 158-429.

20 YEARS AGO

State Engineer Pete Morros is warning of a frightening possibility that Southern California could eye Carson Valley, Carson City and Lyon County as a way to quench its never-ending thirst. He warned that the region must come up with a regional water plan or else.

10 YEARS AGO

Carson City's eastern gateway is taking form at Graves Lane with the construction of a 7-Eleven convenience store, SlotWorld Casino and Meineke Discount Muffler and Brake Shop. All the construction comes at a location expected to become a major intersection as Graves Lane gets extended north to Airport Road.
