Seminar scheduled for educators

Parents for Quality Education will present "Reading: The Foundation of Education" 5-7 p.m. Wednesday in the Nevada Room of the Governor's Mansion, 600 Mountain St. Invited speakers are Tori Hatada, Representative of the Secretary of Education "Reading and its importance to No Child Left Behind," Sharron Angle, former assemblywoman, Sharon Kientz, former National Teacher of the Year with 22 years as a kindergarten teacher. Parks and Rec Board applications available

The Carson City Board of Supervisors is seeking applications from persons interested in serving on the Carson City Parks and Recreation Commission. There is one opening. This term expires Jan. 2010.

Applicants should be aware that a minimum commitment of up to 10 hours a month is expected. The Board of Supervisors shall appoint qualified persons to the board who are residents and registered voters of Carson City.

Volunteer applications may be obtained from and returned to Carson City Executive Offices by Thursday. All applications submitted to this office will be considered public information. The Carson City Executive Offices are located at 201 N. Carson St. No. 2. For information contact 887-2100.

Baskin-Robbins hosts ice cream fundraiser for Fritsch

Baskin-Robbins will host a fundraiser for Fritsch Elementary 4-9 p.m. Friday at the Baskin-Robbins store 3947 S. Carson Street.

Ice cream lovers of all ages can come in, socialize, enjoy the ice cream treats and support Fritsch Elementary. Twenty percent of the proceeds from the ice cream social will be directly donated to Fritsch Elementary.

Douglas County

Golf tournament on Friday to benefit abused women

The Committee to Aid Abused Women Invitational Golf Tournament will be noon Friday at Resort at Red Hawk. The tournament will be held on the Private Hills Course and will benefit the life-saving programs and services of the Committee to Aid Abused Women. Early-bird registration for individual golfers is $200 per golfer. For information contact 329-4150.

Courthouse Museum tour planned

A tour of the Genoa Courthouse Museum is planned for l p.m. Thursday by the Douglas County Genealogy Group.

Tour leader, Billie Rightmire, will be on hand to answer questions relating to Nevada history and genealogy which will emphasize local events in Douglas County.

Anyone interested in the subject is encouraged to attend. A $3 fee will be charged for the tour unless you are a member of the Douglas County Historical Society. Please bring your card. Attendance is limited. Call 783-9626 for reservations.

Harrah's offers winemaker dinner

The Summit at Harrah's Lake Tahoe, featuring contemporary continental cuisine, debuts its first in a series of winemaker dinners Thursday, when The Summit presents Chateau St. Jean Winery of Sonoma County.

The guest presenter will be Barbara Dahl, winery representative, with dinner prepared and matched under the supervision of Summit Chef de Cuisine Michael Pieller.

Reservations for the winemaker dinner may be made by calling 586-6230. Price for the Chateau St. Jean event is $95 per person.

A reception for the dinner begins at 5:30 p.m.

Rita Mae Brown debuts new book

Author and huntsman Rita Mae Brown will be present to launch her new book, "The Tell-Tale Horse," at a special reception 7 p.m. Friday at Ross Creek Ranch, 25 Spoke Road in Reno.

The reception will include an autographed copy of "The Tell-Tale Horse." The event is $125 per person and is sponsored by The Red Rock Hounds. It will benefit the Masters of Foxhounds Association Foundation.

Rita Mae Brown is the best-selling author of the "Sister" Jane Foxhunting Mysteries, The Mrs. Murphy Books and many others.
