Carson man killed in work accident

Family and friends crowded inside Jorge Carmona's tiny North Carson Street apartment on Thursday. They silently sat on couches and stood along the walls as Carmona's 3-year-old son, Jorge, played with other children on the coffee table.

Every hour little Jorge asks where his father is, said Jose Reyes, Carmona's uncle through marriage.

Every hour, whomever Jorge asks is at a loss for what to say.

Carmona, a Carson City resident for the past three years, was killed Wednesday in an accident at his job with Wallis Steel Inc. on Lockheed Way.

According to the police report, Carmona was securing a clamp to a fabricated steel beam standing on its end, when the beam fell.

The 28-year-old married father of two was trapped between the beam and a steel rack until his co-workers muscled him free.

Emergency crews rushed him to the airport for transport to a trauma hospital in Reno, but the damage was too great. Carmona succumbed to his injuries in the ambulance, two weeks from his 29th birthday.

"Incident is consistent with an unfortunate and tragic industrial accident," Deputy Ed Weise wrote in his report.

At Carmona's home on Thursday, the young father smiled out from a large family portrait hanging on the wall. His wife, Gabriela, held up by a friend, stood below the frame reaching and weeping for her husband.

"He was just a nice guy. He don't drink, he don't smoke. Everyday he come home with his wife and his sons," said Reyes. "He was the best person."

Friends have put donation boxes out at various Hispanic businesses and hope that the community will help make Carmona's wish of being buried in Mexico near his grandmother come true.

"If there's any way people can help ...," said Jessica Llamas, whose mother is godmother to Carmona's 1-year-old son, Alexander.

Wallis Steel Inc. owner Lee Wallis could not be reached for comment on Thursday. An unidentified man who answered the company phone declined to say how long Carmona had worked there.

"I can't give out any information. Sorry," he said.

Reyes said his niece is beside herself with grief.

"She's destroyed."
