CHS grad Stalling earns award

Carson High graduate Sarah Stalling received one of the top awards at the second annual Northwest Christian College Champions of Character ceremony held last Thursday.

Stalling, a junior, was presented with Athletic Training Perseverance Award. The award is presented to one female and one male athlete at the school.

Stalling played just five minutes for the Beacon women's soccer team before tearing her anterior cruciate ligament in her knee to end her season in the first game of the year last fall. Stalling had surgery during he fall semester, but remained an integral part of the team as she continued academic and rehabilitation pursuits.

Northwest Christian College is an NAIA school in Eugene, Ore.

Dayton softball rolls against Yerington

Sierra Barnwell pitched a complete game four-hitter for the Dayton High softball team in its 11-1 win over Yerington on Wednesday.

Barnwell didn't allow an earned run as she struck out 10 and walked none in the game that was call after six innings.

Brittany Hill was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI, Mackenzie Cole had a double and an RBI, Breann DeHaven was 1-for-2 with a run and two RBI, Barnwell had a double and a run, Lindsie Cross had a hit and a run, Melissa Coyle went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs and two RBI, Miriah Collins had a hit and three RBI and Kasani Cortez went 2-for-2 with an RBI.

Dayton (17-6, 13-3 in the Northern 3A) has clinched second and will host a best two-of-three series against the Northern 3A's No. 5 on May 9 and 10 for the right to be in the NIAA 3A State Championships.

Dayton baseball sweeps vs. Sparks

Dayton High completed a three-game sweep of Sparks on Saturday to clinch a second place finish in the Northern 3A regular season.

Dayton swept a doubleheader, winning the opener 7-4 and the nightcap 11-4. Freshman Freshman Connor Oliver was the winning pitcher in the opener. Fellow freshman Logan Garling had two RBI and Ryan Ransdell had two doubles and an RBI.

Brandon Aguilera picked up his fifth win of the season in the nightcap. Nick Bircheff led the offense going 2-for-3 with four RBI. Anthony Onstott and Konrad Perkins each had an RBI.

"It was a satisfying to sweep a well-coached team like Sparks," Dayton coach Jay Merrell said.

Dayton still has a chance to finish as the regular season champion if it can sweep Yerington this week and Spring Creek loses once to Lowry.

CHS JV boys track takes second

James Simmons was a double winners to help lead Carson High to a second place finish at the Northern 4A Junior Varsity Track Championships on Tuesday at Spanish Springs.

Carson had 102 points to finish second behind Reno High, which had 156. There were 13 schools in the meet.

Simmons won the 110-meter high hurdles in 16.5 seconds and the 300 hurdles in 41.8. Also for Carson, Evan Pearson won the long jump at 18 feet, 7 inches. Other top finishers for Carson were:

100 - Mark Sinnott, third, 11.7, Ean Witter, fifth, 11.9; 200 - Witter, sixth, 24.0; 1,600 - Logan Philippi, third, 4:55.8, Brent Moyle, eighth, 5:11.2; 3,200 - Philippi, fourth, 10:59.2; 300 hurdles - Luke Carter, fourth, 42.9; long jump - Josh Peacock, seventh.

Triple jump - Pearson, fifth, 37-6 1/2; pole vault - Eric Roberson, Adam Welch, third; Cameron Childers, seventh; shot put - Roberson, second, 42-3; discus - Matt Cooper, seventh; 4x100 relay - Sinnott, Witter, Eric Garcia, Roberson, fourth, 46.1; 4x200 - Sinnott, Witter, Garcia, Roberson, third, 1:39.

For Carson's girls, Sara Anderson won the 100 hurdles in 17.7. Carson finished seventh out of 14 teams. Other top finishers for Carson were:

Alexander Golf Clinic is scheduled

The Fred and Judy Alexander Foundation and the Sierra Nevada Chapter of the Northern California Professional Golf Association will present the 16th annual Fred Alexander Memorial Family Golf Clinic.

The event will be held from 11:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 18 at Empire Ranch Golf Course. Registration will be held from 10:45-11:45 a.m. The clinic is free.

Special guest will be one of the world's premier trick shot artists "The Great Joey O." There will also be 35 Sierra Nevada PGA pros and apprentices providing instruction.

All participants will receive prizes, lunch, T-shirts, backpacks and for those who need it, a golf club.

Babe Ruth opening ceremonies slated

Carson City Babe Ruth will hold its opening ceremony at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 3 at Governor's Field No. 6. During the ceremony, Governor's Field No. 6 will be dedicated to Mr. Dominic Oxoby. The public is invited to attend.

AAU karate school to open

The Shukokai Karate Leadership School and AAU Junior Olympic Training Center is set to open.

The school will be located at the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada. Classes will be held at 5 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays.

Enrollment will be held from 5-7 p.m. Monday, May 5. The first class will be held Wednesday, May 7. All ages are welcome.

The school is part of the AAU's National Karate Program. The goal of the school is to provide Carson City residents the chance to study the art of Karate-do (the way of the empty hand) regardles of financial situation.

Bill Knapp, a fifth degree black belt and master teacher will be the school's instructor. Knapp has more than 35 years of training. He has represented the United States at the World Championships three times and has won more than 50 gold medals in local, regional, national and international competitions. In his more than 20 years of teaching, Knapp has produced many national, international and Junior Olympic champions.
