NIAA names top 10 athletes

Douglas High's Luke Wartgow and Galena's Colleen Mullins were among the top 10 Northern Nevada Student-Athletes named by the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association on Wednesday.

Five senior female and five male athletes in Northern Nevada and Southern Nevada are honored with the award. The award is presented for athletic and academic achievement and for community service. Special consideration is given to student-athletes who participated in multiple sports, other school and student government activities and community service projects while maintaining a high academic standard.

Sponsors for the award are Lifetouch National School Studios, Inc., the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the Reno Gazette-Journal and KRNV-TV Channel 4.

The awards banquet for Southern Nevada will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, May 19, at Sam's Town and the Northern Nevada banquet will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 22 at the Atlantis. The award winners are:

Southern Nevada: LeNette Battle, Shadow Ridge; Jared Dean, Lake Mead; Jesse Houchens, Coronado; Eric Leider, Cheyenne; Devyn Moen, Pahrump Valley; Kourtney Moody, Spring Valley; Frank Satterfield, Green Valley; Samantha Scott, Palo Verde; Nicholas Underwood, Silverado; Randall Van Kempen, Mountain View Christian.

Northern Nevada: Brook Casagranda, Elko; Nathan Chellman, Sage Ridge; Adrienne Hill, Reed; Mullins; Zachary Penrod, Elko; Aaron Quilici, Sparks; Jordan Reeder, Whittell; Karli Vath, South Tahoe; Luke Wartgow, Douglas; Trent Winkel, Reno.
