RENO, Nev. (AP) " Evacuations were ordered Monday afternoon in a residential area on the north edge of Reno where a fast-moving brush fire destroyed at least one home and damaged several others.

The fire broke out just before 3 p.m. east of U.S. Highway 395 and north of North McCarran Boulevard near Clear Acre Lane. It sent up a large plume of black smoke visible from downtown Reno about 5 miles away.

Six structures were burning and at least one had been destroyed by 4 p.m., Reno

Fire spokesman Steve Frady told The Associated Press. He said there had been no report of injuries.

The fire reportedly started in sage brush and grass on a hillside. It was centered on Ridgecrest Drive off of Scottsdale Boulevard in an area south of Truckee Meadows Community College and north of a shopping center with a large Home Depot.

Dozens of firefighters were battling the blaze in gusty winds, Frady said. He said he did not know if the worst had passed and urged motorists to stay away from the area.
