WNC baseball, softball teams begin fall practice

While their 2009 seasons are still months away, the Western Nevada College baseball and softball teams' preparation has already begun as both squads are taking part in fall practice.

The WNC baseball team will hold a nine-inning intrasquad scrimmage at 11 a.m. Sunday at John L. Harvey Field. Admission for the public is free. All 17 pitchers on the Wildcats' roster are scheduled to pitch in the scrimmage.

WNC will begin its fall scrimmage season on August 30 at John L. Harvey Field against the Las Vegas Metro Stars. The teams will play a doubleheader on August 30 at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. and a single game on August 31 at 11 a.m.

Also included on the scheduled is a three-game series with the Reno Astros at Moana Stadium on September 5 and 6, with a doubleheader on September 6.

The Wildcats softball team has also begun preparation for its inaugural season. Fifteen of the 18 players on the roster are from Nevada.

The team features three pitchers in Ambar Huish from Lowry, who was one of the state's top 3A pitchers, Alyson Herman from Santa Monica, Calif., and Annalee Rubio from Spanish Springs.

Rubio was arguably the state's second best pitcher last year behind teammate Mallory Darby, who will pitch for the University of Nevada. Other top local players on the roster include Carson High's Christa Casci and Fernley's Frances Estrada.

The Wildcats will also have several scrimmages this fall, beginning on Sept. 20 and 21 with Sierra, Solono and Feather River Community Colleges here in Carson City. WNC will also conclude the fall with a scrimmage against the University of Nevada at 2 p.m. October 8 in Reno.
