FALLON - Freshman Emily Burns scored 16 points to lead Galena to a 42-30 High Desert League win against Fallon Tuesday at the Elmo Dericco Gym.

The Grizzlies improved to 7-4 in the HDL and 18-8 overall. Fallon droppred to 0-10, 4-19 overall with two games remaining.

Burns, Galena's 5-foot-11 forward, scored most of her points in the first three quarters. She scored many of her baskets on layups and short jump shots.

"She's very smooth in making her baskets," said Galena coach Karen Friel, adding Burns' teammates did a good job in feeding her the ball.

Burns scored six points in the first quarter as Galena jumped out to a 13-6 lead.

The Grizzlies scored the game's first seven points, but Fallon roared back with six unanswered points. The Grizzlies closed the quarter with a 6-0 run.

Galena outscored the Lady Wave, 15-8, in the second quarter to take a 28-14 halftime lead. The Grizzlies kept pulling away from the Wave on baskets from Burns and Langley Iverson, who finished the game with nine points.

Kelsey Hiatt tallied four points for Fallon.

The Wave struggled in the third quarter, falling behind 40-16.

Galena went on an 8-0 run before Kenyah Brown scored Fallon's only basket with 3:01 remaining in the quarter. The Grizzlies spread the scoring around with Colleen Mullins, Hayley Jensen, Colleen Kern and Burns each scoring.

"I thought we kept attacking to the basket and getting easy looks," Friel said.

Friel cleared her bench in the final quarter as the Wave outscored Galena, 14-2.

Overall, Friel said her defense made it difficult for Fallon to run its offense.

"Our guards are not very big, but they are fast and can play defense and get the turnovers," Friel said.

Kern added eight points for Galena. Hiatt and Sara Parson each led Fallon with six points. Alex Faught, Bailey Corkill, Khaliah Brown and Kenyah Brown each had four.
