120 YEARS AGO


News was received that a lady named Mrs. Hughes had arrived at Paradise after having walked seven miles through the snow with the mercury 20 degrees below zero. Her home burned and with no place to go and her husband away, she rescued her seven children from the burning building and made her way to Paradise for assistance. The brave woman had her feet badly frozen by the biting cold. - Silver State.


100 YEARS AGO


Miss Louise Sweeney, who has been critically ill with typhoid fever, now shows improvement. The crisis in the disease has passed.


70 YEARS AGO


A $5 million Nevada Highway program has been announced by the Nevada department of highways. Estimated expenditures by county: Ormsby - $9,822; Douglas - $43,476; Churchill $611,337; Lyon - $148,563.


50 YEARS AGO


Photo caption: A longtime landmark on North Carson Street has disappeared with the removal of the ship's prow from the old Ship Bar, which is being remodeled by John MacDonald to provide added space for Muller's drug store. MacDonald said the store will be given a modern and attractive new front.


20 YEARS AGO


State, federal and local government offices, schools and financial institutions will close Monday in observance of the birthday of slain civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr. This is the first official observance in Nevada of the holiday since the 1987 Legislature declared Martin Luther King's birthday to be a legal holiday.


10 YEARS AGO


Births: To Lori and Dan Woome of Carson City, a daughter, Marin Angeline; to Heather J. and William L. Fitzmorris of Gardnerville, a son, Anthony Michael.
