Ranson named editor of Lahontan Valley News

Longtime Lahontan Valley News and Fallon Eagle Standard employee Steve Ranson has been named the newspaper's editor.

He will assume his new role on March 17 at the LVN, sister paper to the Nevada Appeal.

Ranson will replace Editor Josh Johnson, who has accepted a position at a newspaper in Eau Claire, Wis.

Ranson currently serves as the LVN's sports editor, a position he has held for four years. Previously, he was a part-time sports reporter for 17 years.

"I am very honored to be selected for this position," he said. "Although I have made many friends and covered hundreds of athletes and their sports, I am thrilled to undertake a new challenge. I have spent more than 20 years in Fallon and feel excited to keep a pulse on this community for news. I will still be involved in one capacity or another with sports."

Ranson graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism from the University of Nevada-Reno and received his Master of Education degree in 1980, also from UNR.

He spent 30 years as an educator, 19 of those in Churchill County, and was named Churchill County Teacher of the Year in 1995.

His journalism career has included work at KCRL-TV (now KRNV) in Reno as a weekday producer and weekend newscaster/sports anchor, assistant public information officer for the Wyoming Fish and Game Department and as a sports and feature writer at the Wells Progress in Wells. Ranson began his career at the LVN in 1987.

Ranson has served in the Nevada Army National Guard and U.S. Army Reserve for 27 years, working in a variety of journalistic and public affairs positions in the United States and Panama.

Ranson has two sons - Thomas, 22, and David, 20 - and a daughter, Stephanie, 16.

"While we hate to lose a great asset in Josh, he's making a move for his career and his young family," said LVN Publisher Keven Todd.

"I'm thrilled that we'll be able to tap Steve's broad background and deep roots in the community to make this a smooth transition. I expect Steve to carry forward the best of the initiatives Josh has started, as well as bring new ideas and a fresh perspective to our news organization."
